I Almost Died and My Softball Career Ended; My Purpose Began: The Story Behind Why I Coach Today

There was a time in my life when talking about the end of my softball career was incredibly difficult.

It was a subject that could bring tears to my eyes almost instantly because, in my mind, I thought I knew exactly what my future looked like.

As a young collegiate softball player, I believed softball was going to be something I would play for the rest of my life. I mean why not, I had been playing it since I was 4 years old.  The game was my passion. It was my identity. It was the dream I had worked toward for years.

I never imagined that my playing career would end in the way that it did.

I never imagined that one moment could completely change the direction of my life.

But sometimes the plans we have for ourselves are not always the plans God has for us.

In my most recent podcast episode, I share the story of how I almost lost my life and how my softball career came to an unexpected end. I share a piece of my journey that, for many years, was painful to revisit—but today, I can look back with gratitude for the fire I was asked to walk through.

Because through that experience, God revealed my purpose.

The Moment Everything Changed

My college softball career ended after I experienced a life-threatening medical situation involving a blood clot in my brain that almost caused me to dies from an annurysm caused by a rare genetic clotting disorder.

In an instant, the future I had envisioned changed.

The dreams of continuing my playing career, competing on the field, and seeing where softball would take me looked completely different.

For a long time, I wrestled with the question:

"Why did this happen?"

Why would something I loved so much be taken away?

Why would the game that had given me so much suddenly become something I could no longer pursue the way I had planned?

But over time, I began to understand something much bigger:

God wasn't taking something away from me.

He was preparing me for something greater.

The Purpose Hidden Inside the Pain

Looking back now, I can see moments where God was already preparing my heart for what was next.

When I was a senior in high school, He placed coaching on my heart. So I started giving lessons amd coaching with my local little league. At the time, I didn't fully understand why. I was still focused on my own playing career and what I wanted my future to look like.

Little did I know that the passion I had for the game wasn't only meant to be experienced as a player.

It was meant to be multiplied through others.

Nearly 30 years later, coaching at multiple levels from rec ball to colligate ball, to working with Pitchers 1:1, to coaching camps and clinics...coaching has become the calling I never knew I needed.

Today, I have the privilege of pouring into young athletes globally, helping them develop their pitching skills, build confidence, overcome adversity, and discover what they are truly capable of achieving.

The game that I thought was ending became the platform God used to create my purpose.

Why I Share This Story

I share this story because I know there are athletes who are currently walking through their own challenges.

Maybe it's an injury.

Maybe it's a setback.

Maybe it's a failure.

Maybe it's a dream that doesn't unfold the way they imagined.

I want athletes and parents to know that a difficult season does not mean the story is over.

Sometimes the moments that hurt the most are the moments that shape us the most.

The lessons I learned through my own adversity are the same lessons I now teach my athletes:

• Trust the process.

• Keep showing up.

• Find growth in the challenges.

• Don't allow one setback to define your future.

• Your identity is bigger than the game you play.

My Mission Through Kally V Softball

Today, my mission is bigger than teaching pitchers how to throw a softball.

Of course, mechanics matter. Velocity matters. Command matters.

But developing a pitcher is about so much more than the physical side of the game.

It's about developing confidence. It's about building resilience. It's about teaching athletes how to respond when things don't go according to plan. It's about helping them become the best version of themselves both on and off the field.

This is why I created the KVS Mentorship Program.

Through personalized 1:1 hybrid and/or remote training, I help pitchers develop with a clear plan, consistent coaching, accountability, and support throughout their journey.

Whether your daughter trains with me through my Hybrid Mentorship Program locally or works with me as a fully remote athlete from anywhere in the world, the goal remains the same:

To help her become a confident, consistent, fundamentally sound pitcher who understands the process behind success.
