New Year’s Resolutions That Actually Help Pitchers Grow

New year, new goals — but not all resolutions actually help pitchers develop.

Every January, I see pitchers chasing the same things: throwing harder, doing more workouts even more than one at a time, adding more pitches, or comparing themselves to everyone else online. While those goals might sound productive, they often miss the bigger picture of what truly leads to long-term success in fastpitch pitching.

The truth is, development isn’t about doing more than the pitcher next to you. It’s about doing what you need — per YOUR/HER journey — with intention.

That’s why I wanted to reset the conversation around New Year’s resolutions in this episode of The Kally V Podcast: Owning Your Opportunity and shift the focus back to what actually supports pitchers physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Because real development isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about consistency, intention, and playing the long game.

Why Most Pitching Resolutions Fall Short

When pitchers set goals based on:

  • Velocity jumps

  • Social media comparison

  • Parental expectations

  • What teammates or opponents are doing

They often end up frustrated, discouraged, or burned out.

Progress doesn’t happen on someone else’s timeline. And success looks different for every pitcher depending on age, experience, workload, and opportunity.

The Goal-Setting Tool I Use With My Pitchers in the KVS Mentorship Program

One of the most important things I implement with my pitchers is a structured goal-setting tool that removes comparison and creates clarity.

This tool helps pitchers:

  • Identify their long-term goal

  • Break it down into realistic short-term benchmarks

  • Focus on controllables instead of outcomes

  • Track progress without pressure

Instead of asking, “Why is she ahead of me?” We ask, “What does my next step look like?”

This process teaches pitchers & parents how to:

  • Trust their development timeline

  • Build confidence through preparation

  • Stay focused on progress, not perfection

Success comes from stacking small wins — not racing someone else’s journey.

Playing the Long Game

The pitchers who last — and thrive — are the ones who commit to:

  • Intentional training

  • Smart goal-setting

  • Mental and physical health

New Year’s resolutions should support development, not rush it.

When pitchers learn how to set goals the right way, they don’t just improve — they grow into confident, resilient competitors.
