In the competitive world of softball, physical skills are essential, but what truly sets apart exceptional athletes from good ones is their mental toughness. Just like strengthening muscles through training, honing your mental game is a vital aspect of reaching peak performance on the field. Welcome to your guide on mental toughness training tailored specifically for softball athletes, coaches, and parents from KVS with almost 30 years of playing and coaching experience.

Understanding the Power of Mental Training
Athletes are no strangers to the concept of training – hours spent perfecting their form, increasing strength and speed, and refining technique. However, what often gets overlooked is the importance of training the mind. Our headspace plays a significant role in our performance, affecting everything from focus and resilience to confidence and decision-making abilities.
The Athlete's Arsenal: Mental Toughness Techniques
Visualization
Funs fact, before visualization was trending like it is now, this is something that my mom taught me when she was my coach many years ago. From youth softball, throughout high school, travel ball and even college ball my mom would always find a way to trigger me in a positive way with a simple phrase, "see it little bit." No joke, she would say this out loud and throughout the noise of a game I could hear her voice and BOOM it would lock me into my tunnel to see the pitch before I throw the pitch.
One powerful mental training technique is visualization. Take time each day to visualize yourself excelling on the field. Picture the perfect swing, the flawless catch, or the winning throw. By consistently visualizing success, you condition your mind to believe in your abilities and perform when it matters most.
Goal Setting
This is something that my current KVS Pitching Community (online clients, KVS pitching members, small group and 1:1 trainees) do on a regular. Always finding a way to set healthy goals in order to keep knowing how we grow forward, setting up healthy boundaries that match our short term and long-term goals.
Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals is another crucial aspect of mental training. By clearly defining your objectives, you give yourself a roadmap to success, fueling motivation and focus along the way. Celebrate each milestone achieved, no matter how small, as it signifies progress towards your ultimate goal.
Positive Self-Talk
This is HUGE and if you have worked with KVS before or you are working with KVS now, then YOU KNOW that this is a pillar in your training on and off the mound. Example used a lot is talk to your self the way you would talk to your best friend.
Your inner dialogue has a profound impact on your performance. Replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations. Instead of saying, "I can't do this," reframe it as, "I am capable, and I will succeed." Cultivating a mindset of self-belief and resilience empowers you to overcome obstacles and push past limitations.
Also, another KVS staple in positive self-talk is the "don't think of an elephant" example.

Embrace Adversity
Encourage your players to view setbacks as opportunities for growth. Resilience is not about avoiding failure but about learning from it and emerging stronger. By fostering a culture that celebrates resilience and perseverance, you empower your team to bounce back from defeats and strive for greatness.
With KVS this is a topic that gets discussed a lot as each pitcher's and mental trainee's journey is full of their personal adversity and yet this creates their personal VICTORY!
By now you may have heard the phrase, "turn your trials into your TRIUMPS." When we begin to embrace our most challenging moments as an opportunity to own so we can keep moving forward we end up building resilience. This is definitely something that can be applied to softball but more importantly to each athlete's life, even when softball is over.
Foster a Growth Mindset
Instill in your players the belief that their abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. A growth mindset promotes a love for learning and resilience in the face of obstacles. Emphasize the journey of improvement rather than fixating on immediate results, cultivating a team of lifelong learners and achievers.
In the pitching world the growth mindset gets blurred when pitchers are taught to embrace the results (the strikes) vs. the journey in how to build a better pitch from the ground up. When a pitcher is taught to embrace her journey through the highs, the lows, the peeks the valleys, she truly learns how to lose in order to know how to win but more importantly she learns how to LEARN!!!
Parental Support: Nurturing Mental Wellness in Young Athletes
Softball parents play a crucial role in supporting their children's athletic journey. Beyond cheering from the stands, you can positively impact your child's mental toughness and well-being.
At KVS we support the Coach, the Athlete and the Parent! Honestly as a coach of almost 30 years I have learned that for every athlete I get another component of them to coach and support. Thier parental units.

As this blog comes to a close, I want to leave you with TWO big tools to keep in your Teammate belt, Your Parent belt and your Coach belt.
Encourage Balance with Counter Balance
While dedication to the sport is essential, it's vital to encourage balance in your child's life. Help them prioritize self-care, schoolwork, and social connections alongside their softball commitments. A well-rounded individual is better equipped to handle the demands of competitive sports.
Things like helping them build a schedule for their schoolwork, training, food prep, hydration and yes even sleep goals will in turn teach your child how to do the hard things as they embrace their journey. The secret to getting your kid to "put the work in" is to KEEP IT SIMPLE, as simple as teaching them how to create the habit of brushing their teeth.
Be a Positive Influence
Your words and actions carry significant weight in your child's development as an athlete and more importantly as a person. Offer words of encouragement, celebrate their efforts (small wins), and provide a supportive environment for them to thrive. By being a positive and understanding presence, you foster a sense of security and confidence in your child's abilities.
Another hot topic that KVS teaches athletes to embrace is how to be your biggest fan and your biggest critique all in one. By doing this, it teaches the athlete to protect their LOVE, PEACE and JOY for this game one pitch at a time. It's vital to understand that this adopted concept doesn't just happen overnight, it happens in strides by the athlete having permission to allow their selves to define their WHY! If you are currently or have been a KVS client, you already know! #IYKYK
