Your Pitcher Doesn’t Need More Pressure—She Needs Permission to Grow

For softball parents, pitchers and coaches: development isn't about creating a finished product. It's about developing a confident, resilient young woman who knows how to grow.

Over the past few weeks, I've had several conversations with pitchers and their families that all seem to point back to the same thing:

Pressure.

Pressure to throw harder. Pressure to perform. Pressure to be consistent. Pressure to make the team. Pressure to get recruited. Pressure to become the pitcher everyone believes she can be.

But here's what I want parents and pitchers to remember:

Your daughter doesn't have to be the finished product today.

She is learning. She's developing. She's going to make mistakes. Her mechanics will change. Her confidence will change.

That's development.

As a pitching coach, I don't just want to tell a pitcher what she's doing wrong. I want her to understand WHY it's happening so she can eventually recognize it and correct it herself.

That's ownership.

Slow Down. Learn. Grow.

Sometimes we have to slow the process down to truly understand it.

Break down the movement.

Feel the position.

Understand the purpose.

Make the adjustment.

Then build it back up.

Progress isn't always a faster pitch or a new velocity PR.

Sometimes progress is a pitcher finally understanding her drive leg, creating better front-side resistance, or recognizing a mechanical mistake without someone else having to tell her.

Those moments matter.

Stop Comparing

Social media makes it easy for pitchers to compare themselves to everyone else.

Another pitcher is throwing harder.

Another athlete just committed.

Another pitcher looks perfect.

And suddenly she's asking:

"Why am I not there yet?"

Because she's on her timeline.

There will always be someone further along.

The goal isn't to create another pitcher.

The goal is to help her become the best version of herself.

The Mental Game Matters

Pitching isn't just physical.

That's why I teach my pitchers:

One thought. One pitch.

Not five mechanical cues. Not the last mistake. Not what everyone else is doing.

One thought. One job. One pitch.

Then reset.

The goal isn't to eliminate mistakes. It's to teach a pitcher how to respond to them.

Parents, Give Her Permission to Grow

One of the hardest things we can do as parents is separate our dreams from our daughter's dreams.

Maybe you see college softball.

Maybe you see an elite pitcher.

But what happens when she's overwhelmed? What happens when her goals change? What happens when she isn't sure she wants to continue pitching?

We have to give our daughters permission to say:

"This isn't what I want right now."

That isn't failure.

Sometimes the most powerful thing a parent can say is:

"You don't have to do this for me. I love you whether you pitch or not."

Because at the end of the day, we're not just developing pitchers.

We're developing people.
